What the puck?!

This is a hockey themed cake I did for a friend’s nephew.

Johnny's Hockey Cake

Complete with busted out toofs and everything.

Johnny's Hockey Cake

I’ve got more stuff that I’m really excited about in the hopper, too. Stay tuned…

And the winner is…

First, thanks to everyone who commented. I *heart* you.

Second, there were a lot of great ideas and I had a really hard time choosing just one. Because, uh, the Pink Squirrel Martini? Sounds DAH-licious. And a White Romanian? I’d hate to be in a room with one of those. No wait, I’d love it actually. Especially if it had a shot or two of chocolate.

Because, mmmmm. Chocolate. How is it that one thing could be so universally loved? Simultaneously sought after. So utterly enjoyable. I’m not sure. Maybe I should ponder that over some chocolate.

So, without further adieu, the winner is… the Mudslide. Kelly F, you’re the winner!

I can just see it now —> A chocolate Kahlua cupcake topped with whipped Bailey’s Irish Cream frosting with chocolate drizzled on top.

These cupcakes are going to rock.

Happy Birthday, Beth!

Okay, guys, before you read this I want you to go and leave a comment on my last post if you already haven’t, K? Come on, it’ll be fun. And you could win a set of sweet hurricane glasses. Just think… you and three of your pals sipping on frosty strawberry daiquiries… Hurry! Go leave a comment now. I’m picking a winner Friday, August 6th!

So, last week a friend of mine whom I’ve known and worked with for years asked me to make some cupcakes for his special gal. They were going to celebrate her birthday up in Traverse City, home of the cherry festival. Naturally there had to be a cherry in the design somewhere, right? So we talked over some of his ideas and settled on some cute sundae cupcakes complete with a cherry on top.

Sundae Cakes

I made the fondant cherries a few days before and let them set.

Sundae Cupcakes

I covered cherry chip flavored cupcakes with fondant.

Sundae Cupcakes

Melted down chocolate candy melts for the chocolate topping, added some sprinkles and popped the cherry on top while the topping was still cooling.

Sundae Cupcakes

I think they turned out great.

I hope she liked them :)

If you like pina coladas…

Okay. So I’m just going to have to deal with posting fuzzy iPhone pics until I learn how to use the huz’s fancy DSLR. Ugh. But it’s got so many buttons, you guys! And what do I know about shutter speed? Or f-stops? You got it. Nothing.

Anyhoodle. These are the first in a series of cupcakes I’m calling “Cocktail Cupcakes.” First up, pina coladas–pineapple flavored yellow cake with coconut buttercream.

Pina Colada Cupcake

These were super easy to make. I used yellow cake mix, but I replaced water with pineapple juice. And I flavored regular vanilla buttercream with 1/4 tsp of coconut extract. I got a bazillion of those cocktail umbrellas at Gordon Food Service, which really kind of make the cupcakes, don’t you think?

Pina Colada Cupcakes Umbrellas

Here’s a list of other cocktails I’m planning to make into cupcakes:

  • Mojito
  • Margarita
  • Strawberry daiquiri
  • Chocolate martini

What other cocktails do you think would be good as a cupcake? Leave me a comment… the yummiest idea will win a set of four hurricane glasses!

CherryChip on Style Me Pretty!

GUESS WHAT?! I can finally let you in on my little secret!

Okay, so back in May, my friend Robyn asked if I wanted to get in on an “inspiration to reality” photo shoot. Meaning, a group of individuals donate their time and talent to put together an inspiration board to submit to popular wedding sites. The plan was to submit it to Style Me Pretty first, which is on of the more popular wedding blogs.

When Robyn told me the wedding theme was going to have a retro carnival feel to it, I could hardly contain myself because HOW FUN? My contribution was to be a simply frosted white cake and a dozen flower embellished cupcakes. Robyn from did the invitations, Nicole was the photographer and Jamie the videographer. And, of course, the mastermind behind it all, Amanda from Bliss Weddings & Events.

We all met up in the morning at St. Mary’s Polish Country Fair, pretty much meeting for the first time, and had ourselves a photo shoot. Even though a lot of the coordinating was done via phone and email, everything turned out amazing. The models were adorable (the bride even made her own dress!) and the setting was absolutely perfect for our “Flirty at the Fair” wedding theme.

So, without further adieu, here is the inspiration to reality board we submitted. Oh, did I tell you? Style Me Pretty LOVED it. So much so, it landed on the cover!

Okay, fine.

So I was thinking about it. And we are our own worst critic, right? Right. I’ll show you the pics of my fire truck cake then. Keep in mind two things, though. 1. It’s not quite finished in any of these pics and 2. the pics were taken with my iPhone. By me. Who is not a photographer. At all.

Awww, how tweet.

I’ve really been digging birds lately. So when I got a request to do lovebird cupcakes for a small wedding, I was all like, um, yes please!

Here are the fabulous nest cupcake liners I’m going to use. Aren’t they absolutely perfect? With two birds and a heart nestled into fluffy, swirly buttercream? Ah. Dorable.

The wedding is in July, so you’ll have to wait a bit. I promise I will post pics, though. I know I haven’t been posting pics of my stuff lately… I’ve just been so darn busy lately!

*sad face*

Oh. Mah. Gawd, you guys.

I know. I KNOW. I haven’t updated in so long. Partly because it’s be CAH-raze-y up in here. Work is just nuts, which has been keeping me late, which has been leaving no time for baking and such. On top of that, I’ve had orders up the Yin Yang. I actually pulled an all-nighter last week. It seriously took me the whole weekend to recover! But it was a fun project and it turned out pretty good. I didn’t get very good pics, tho, so I’m still debating on whether or not I’m gonna share.

How about I show you a pic of my new patio furniture instead?

New Patio Set

This is not going to appease you, is it?

Okay, how about I talk about this little secret I can’t share with you? Well, I still can’t share, but I can give you a peek and a cryptic description about what I’m up to…

Bliss Cupcakes

These sweet little ladies were part of a photo shoot a couple of weeks ago (guess that wasn’t too cryptic). The photo shoot was at a festival and involved a whole mess of talented individuals. And that’s all I can say right now!

Next up: Wedding cupcakes!

Happy Memorial Day

I hope you’ve been having a great Memorial Day weekend like have been having so far. It’s included Tudors, baking, family, swimming, Doritos, more baking, and tomorrow, a Memorial Day cookout and belated birthday celebration for my niece and nephew.

My nephew is… uh… ten, I think. The perfect age for a hatching dinosaur cake.

Dinosaur Cupcake

Dinosaur Cupcake Close Up

For my niece, who just turned 5, a girly bejeweled birthday cake. Of course it’s pink. With a pink pearl necklace and a heart-shaped ring pop. See how is shimmers?

Jewel Cake

Every shimmery pink cake NEEDS swirly pink cupcakes with heart sprinkles to match. Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.

Birthday Cupcakes

I also did some cupcakes and a cake for… well, I can’t tell you just yet. I want to. Really bad. But I can’t. Hopefully I’ll be able to blab it all over my blog in a few weeks. Until then, my lips are sealed.

Also? Who’s down for a giveaway?

Let me know,
K

Down the rabbit hole.

Whelp. It’s over. They’re gone. The Alice in Wonderland cupcakes/cake were picked up yesterday. The vanilla bean buttercream of the Queen of Hearts cupcake. The tiny fondant Mad Hatter top hats. And the chocolatey grins of the Cheshire Cat. All gone.

Alice in Wonderland Cupcakes

Here’s the Alice cake. Man, she was adorable. A little too curious for her own good, but adorable none the less. With her pretty little fondant flowers and bow. And her baby blue buttercream.

Alice in Wonderland Cake

Alice in Wonderland Cake2

Definitely one of my finer achievement thus far. I had so much fun with these Alice in Wonderland cupcakes (and the cake). From the planning to the baking to the decorating–I loved every minute of it. Especially the taste testing ;)
