This cake and accompanying cupcakes turned out so darn cute I can hardly stand it.
Makes me want a little girl of my own.
Speaking of nieces and their birthday cakes, this is the Belle cake I did for my niece, Addison. Whom I love dearly. She’s a tiny little doll who is not afraid to tell it like it is. She gets that from her mamma.
Of course Belle needed to be surrounded by all her princess friends, so I had to make cupcakes as well.
This blurry iPhone pic is not doing these gals justice. Sorry, girls.
It redeemed itself by picking up the sparkle in this pic, though.
Ahhhh, finally. I bet you thought I had abandoned you, didn’t you? Nope. Just been busy. Oh sure, next I’m going to say “It’s not you, it’s me”, right? Never.
So here’s my latest. A sweet little angel cake topper made of fondant.
To go on top of her very own cloud cake.
And, of course, heavenly cupcakes to match.
I hope you’ve been having a great Memorial Day weekend like have been having so far. It’s included Tudors, baking, family, swimming, Doritos, more baking, and tomorrow, a Memorial Day cookout and belated birthday celebration for my niece and nephew.
My nephew is… uh… ten, I think. The perfect age for a hatching dinosaur cake.
For my niece, who just turned 5, a girly bejeweled birthday cake. Of course it’s pink. With a pink pearl necklace and a heart-shaped ring pop. See how is shimmers?
Every shimmery pink cake NEEDS swirly pink cupcakes with heart sprinkles to match. Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.
I also did some cupcakes and a cake for… well, I can’t tell you just yet. I want to. Really bad. But I can’t. Hopefully I’ll be able to blab it all over my blog in a few weeks. Until then, my lips are sealed.
Also? Who’s down for a giveaway?
Let me know,
K
Whelp. It’s over. They’re gone. The Alice in Wonderland cupcakes/cake were picked up yesterday. The vanilla bean buttercream of the Queen of Hearts cupcake. The tiny fondant Mad Hatter top hats. And the chocolatey grins of the Cheshire Cat. All gone.
Here’s the Alice cake. Man, she was adorable. A little too curious for her own good, but adorable none the less. With her pretty little fondant flowers and bow. And her baby blue buttercream.
Definitely one of my finer achievement thus far. I had so much fun with these Alice in Wonderland cupcakes (and the cake). From the planning to the baking to the decorating–I loved every minute of it. Especially the taste testing

P.S. Thanks to the huz for the awesome photos and a giant high five for the mad child watching skillz.
We went to Florida last week. Oh, didn’t I tell that? Oops. I’ll make it up to you by posting some pics of our time in the sun, sand and surf soon, okay?
In meantime, here’s a coupla pics of my son’s first birthday celebration in 2008. And, yes, he is wearing a homemade Uncle Sam hat. His first birthday fell on Labor Day. What was I supposed to do?
Which only left him with one choice.

BRB,

Okay, so I stole that line from my husband, but what’s his is mine, right?
My nephew is nuts about Batman. Personally? I’m creeped out by bats. However, if I was falling from atop a mile-high skyscraper in Gotham City, I’d sure appreciate Batman swooping in to save me. I’d say thanks for sure. I just don’t know if I’d stick around for tea, you know? Something about those leathery wings and beady little eyes… I can’t handle it. Maybe it was all the stories I heard as a kid about bats flying into your hair, making a nest and having a billion baby bats in there. Folks, I had every reason to be worried about exactly that. Have you seen my hair? Well, let’s just say there is a lot of it. Ample room for a family of bats to set up shop.
*shudder*
Anyway. Here’s the Batman birthday cake I did for my nephew. Don’t laugh. I had some issues with the fondant. I made it myself and apparently it didn’t feel like cooperating.
Perhaps I didn’t let it “rest” long enough. Or maybe the consistency wasn’t exactly right. I kept having to re-roll it out. Trust me, it was frustrating. I supposed that’s what I get for not making it beforehand.
And then there was this topsy turvy thing I had going on. Why I decided to try my hand at shaping for this particular cake? No idea. It just kind of happened. I think it turned out okay. Not my best work. My nephew got a kick out of it, though, so that’s all that counts. He actually saved the bat signal from the top. So cute.
This was the cake I did for my son’s 2nd birthday. Although it looks sort of laborious, it was actually super easy. I got the instructions from here.

I modified it a bit (like using Milk Duds for “rocks” and crushed Chips Ahoy! cookies for “dirt”), but it still turned out fabulous. My son LOVED it. I made the mistake of setting it out before the party. Oh man. Where there some serious tears when mommy told him he couldn’t play with it until after the guests arrived. And we ate lunch. And we sang happy birthday. And… And… And. And, wow, that poor kid. It’s hell when mommy makes you a sweet bulldozer cake for your birthday!

I did this cake/cupcake combo for a co-worker’s friend’s 40th birthday (got that?). It was my first time making my own chocolate marshmallow fondant. The inside was devil’s food cake with super fluffy vanilla buttercream. Sorry about the blurry iPhone photos… I need to take a few lessons from my husband when it comes to photography, apparently!
