Pretty Purple Flowers
Friday, September 9th, 2011Sunshine on a rainy day.
Wednesday, May 25th, 2011A while back I did the cutest love bird cupcakes for a wedding. I got an email from the bride, Katie, yesterday that just made my day.
She included some lovely pictures like this one.
Along with the pictures, she thanked me for the cupcakes… but really, I should thank her. Why? Because It feels incredible to have something I’ve made be a part of such happy moments like this.
Happy Birthday, Beth!
Saturday, July 31st, 2010Okay, guys, before you read this I want you to go and leave a comment on my last post if you already haven’t, K? Come on, it’ll be fun. And you could win a set of sweet hurricane glasses. Just think… you and three of your pals sipping on frosty strawberry daiquiries… Hurry! Go leave a comment now. I’m picking a winner Friday, August 6th!
So, last week a friend of mine whom I’ve known and worked with for years asked me to make some cupcakes for his special gal. They were going to celebrate her birthday up in Traverse City, home of the cherry festival. Naturally there had to be a cherry in the design somewhere, right? So we talked over some of his ideas and settled on some cute sundae cupcakes complete with a cherry on top.
I made the fondant cherries a few days before and let them set.
I covered cherry chip flavored cupcakes with fondant.
Melted down chocolate candy melts for the chocolate topping, added some sprinkles and popped the cherry on top while the topping was still cooling.
I think they turned out great.
I hope she liked them

Awww, how tweet.
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010I’ve really been digging birds lately. So when I got a request to do lovebird cupcakes for a small wedding, I was all like, um, yes please!
Here are the fabulous nest cupcake liners I’m going to use. Aren’t they absolutely perfect? With two birds and a heart nestled into fluffy, swirly buttercream? Ah. Dorable.
The wedding is in July, so you’ll have to wait a bit. I promise I will post pics, though. I know I haven’t been posting pics of my stuff lately… I’ve just been so darn busy lately!

If at first you don’t succeed…
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Chai, chai again. That’s been my theme for the last week. Being the only copywriter left has been pretty… uh… demanding to say the least. Instead of whipping up buttercream, I’ve been trying to beat deadlines. Instead of frosting cupcakes, I’ve been trying to avoid getting creamed.
In an attempt to simmer down, I’ve been drinking a lot of tea lately. Except, I might have it backwards since tea has caffeine and, well, we know what caffeine does to a person, right? Anyway. Chai tea is my fav. Except our swanky coffee machine at work doesn’t offer a good chai. Actually it doesn’t even offer a bad chai. It offers no chai. And since I can’t run out to Starbucks every half hour, I’ve been concocting my own chai latte while at work.
- Bigelow Vanilla Chai tea bag
- Two packets of Truvia
- Three regular creamers
- One vanilla flavored creamer
I know, right? Not quite the same, but it works. Sort of. Don’t judge me! My point is, all this chai business has me craving these chai latte cupcakes.
The recipe is from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. Yeah, they’re vegan. And they are absolutely awesome. The recipe calls for a dusting of powdered sugar instead of frosting, but I just HAD to have frosting on these. I tried a vegan cream cheese frosting using this. Meh. It was okay. Well, let me clarify. The cream cheese frosting turned out fabulous. It’s just that the two flavors competed too much.
So the next time I made them I topped them with plain old vanilla buttercream. It complemented the spicey-ness of the chai latte cupcake perfectly. Just kinda hung back while the cardamon and cloves did their thing. Sooooo good. I’m serious. You need to make yourself a batch. They have a couple extra steps and include some pricey spices you might not have laying around, but I’m telling you. They’re worth it.
Peace out,
K
I *heart* These Cupcakes
Thursday, April 1st, 2010I love malts. Chocolate malts. Vanilla malts. Whoppers. Those colorful chocolate covered malted robin’s eggs you can only find during Easter. Love ‘em. In fact, I bought two bags this year. One for my son’s basket. And one for me. To secretly eat when I think no one is looking.
I made these chocolate cupcakes with vanilla malt buttercream as part of a (cup)cake tasting for a wedding. Although I loved the flavor of this cupcake, I probably wouldn’t use the malt to flavor the buttercream again. It makes it too gritty. It wasn’t like biting into sandpaper or anything, but I like my buttercream nice and velvety, the way butter cream is supposed to be.
Despite the less than silky smooth texture of the vanilla malt buttercream, the bride and groom still thought they were pretty darn tasty. Needless to say I was elated they ended up taking the left overs home with them. Otherwise I would have had a whole mess of chocolate vanilla malt cupcake I would just HAD to have eaten.
Bye for now,
K
In Honor of Spring
Thursday, March 25th, 2010These are some cupcakes I did for a friend’s daughter’s birthday. Her nickname is Veggies. I thought, what could be cuter than cupcakes with “dirt” for frosting and veggies on top? Uh. Not much.
I started with chocolate cupcakes. Frosted them with chocolate frosting. Then crushed up Trader Joe’s chocolate kitty cookies and sprinkled them on top for the dirt.
I made the veggies out of candy. Orange Starburst and green apple Laffy Taffy for the carrots.
Cherry Starburst dipped in white chocolate and cornflakes dipped in green tinted white chocolate for the radishes.
And my personal favorite, green apple Laffy Taffy and green M&Ms for peas.
I think they turned out pretty darn spiffy if I do say so myself. The birthday girl sure loved them, too.
Later gator,

A Very Merry Un-Birthday
Monday, March 22nd, 2010I just got approval on some cupcake designs for an Alice in Wonderland themed one-year birthday party. And y’all, I’m sooooo excited. I might not say this when I’m trying to get two dozen cupcakes and a six-inch smash cake done, but *squee* how fun is this going to be?
Since the order is for 24 cupcakes, I tried to keep the designs fairly simple, but still wonderland-tastic. I don’t have to do this for a while (May), but keep your eyes out for pics of how they turn out.
xoxo,
K
Two great tastes that taste great together
Friday, March 19th, 2010Peanut butter. Mmmmm. Chocolate. NOM, NOM. What could be better than topping a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter buttercream? Not much. Except maybe covering peanut butter with chocolate.
These are totally vegan, btw. Not to mention totally delicious. Just ask my husband.
TTYL,
K
